The Brothers of Charity in Limerick City and West Limerick provide a range of services that contribute to the enhancement of the lives of many individuals with intellectual disabilities and their families. These include residential facilities, work training and placement, leisure and lifestyle activities, respite, physical and intellectual training, assessment, advisory and limited counselling services, family support, public awareness and education.

The Brothers of Charity in Galway offers services to over 1000 children and adults who have an intellectual disability and their families. There is wide range of services with an emphasis on community based services provided mainly through four community-oriented teams: Early Childhood Services, the School Age Team, the Aftercare team and Supported Employment, and the Ballinasloe-based multidisciplinary team. This work is supported by a range of multidisciplinary specialists and there is a network of respite care and a family support system.

St.Gabriel’s School is located in Dooradoyle, Limerick, adjacent to St.Gabriel’s Centre and is one of  five similar schools in the country. It is a primary and post primary day school for children from 4-18 years old with multiple, physical/sensory disabilities and/or developmental delay. St.Gabriel’s Centre provides health related supports to the children who attend the school through the Treehouse Early Intervention Team.

St.Gabriel’s Centre
is a partnership between Limerick Children’s Services, Brothers of Charity, Enable Ireland, St.Joseph’s Foundation (Charleville) and the Health Service Executive West. The partnership is responsible for the provision of team-based health services in the region to children with disabilities aged 0-18 years.

St.Gabriel’s hydrotherapy pool
opened in January 2009. It is available to children who attend St. Gabriel's School & Centre as well as external groups and individuals who have various disabilities and medical conditions. Amongst the conditions that hydrotherapy can benefit are; arthritis, low back pain, sports injuries, rehabilitation following stroke and orthopaedic surgery and in the treatment of pain management.

The Central Remedial Clinic centre based in St Gabriel’s, Limerick, is providing a range of services to people in the Mid-West region. In April 2005, the world’s first mobile Gait Laboratory, developed by the Central Remedial Clinic, was launched at St. Gabriel’s, providing a highly sophisticated and specialised service locally to the region. An adult and paediatric seating and mobility service is run from the centre, as is an Assistive Technology service.

The Clare Crusaders clinic was established in 2007 to help children with special needs in the areas of Cerebral Palsy, Autism, Down Syndrome and a variety of other conditions. The clinic is based in Barefield, Ennis, Co. Clare, providing speech therapy, occupational therapy and physiotherapy to 120 children in the Clare region free of charge.  All funds are raised through volunteers and the charity does not receive government funding.

The Jack & Jill Foundation provides early intervention home respite to families with children up to the age of 4, with severe neurological developmental delay and palliative conditions requiring extensive medical and nursing care at home.  Look up the liaison nurse for your area on this site.

Enable Ireland provides services to over 3,500 children and adults with disabilities and their families from 15 locations and in local communities countrywide. In some locations, services are provided in partnership with other organisations and may be known under a different name. Enable Ireland has an extensive library of books and publications on disability.

Enable Ireland
Mid West Respite Services provides an in-home respite service for families and primary care givers for children with physical disabilities under 18 years of age. This service offers a break to parents by providing a family support person. This service is available both in a crisis situation and also as a planned response to ongoing needs.

Enable Ireland Limerick
currently works in partnership with the Health Service Executive (HSE) and four voluntary agencies in the Limerick area. The four agencies involved include the Brothers of Charity, St. Gabriel's Centre, Limerick and St. Joseph's Foundation, Charleville. A transdisciplinary team works very closely together while interacting with families on a team and/or key worker basis. The team consists of a social worker, a psychologist, an occupational therapist, an early intervention specialist, a physiotherapist, a speech and language therapist, an administrator and a clerical assistant. 

Enable Ireland Galway has been in operation since 1996 and was set up in co-operation with the Western Health Board. The Child Development Centre provides an integrated team assessment and therapy service for children with physical disabilities in Co. Galway and a support service to their families. Children up to the age of 18 years and their families avail of the centre's services. 

Enable Ireland North Tipperary has been providing family support and respite services to children and adults with disabilities since 1997. Services are currently provided for approximately 135 children with intellectual, physical, sensory and autism spectrum disabilities in North Tipperary.

This site outlines the Daughters of Charity services for children and adults with intellectual disabilities.

 In Limerick, at St. Vincent’s Centre, Lisnagry, the service provides residential, day care, education and a variety of other services for children and adults with moderate, severe and profound intellectual disabilities. The parents association is known as the Lisnagry Association and is involved in fundraising and improvement in services.

 In Tipperary, St. Anne’s Centre in Roscrea transferred to the Daughters of Charity in 2008.  No further information is available on this site.  It offers services to over 500 people with moderate, severe and profound intellectual disability in the North Tipperary and Offaly regions.  Email info@stannes.ie.  St. Anne’s Special School is contactable on 0505 21002.

Voices for Galway is a collaboration between the Galway Branch of Down Syndrome Ireland and the Department of Speech Therapy in NUIG. This model allows people with Down Syndrome to access Speech and Language Therapy in a state of the art facility in NUIG. In return speech and language students gain clinical experience on site. The entire project is funded through charitable donations and fund-raising by the Voices for Galway project. It receives no state or institutional funding. Two senior specialist Speech and Language therapists and an Occupational therapist currently work on the project as well as an administrative assistant. Since the start of the project, 85 members have been assessed and currently over 50 are receiving Speech and Language and Occupational Therapy.

Centres for Independent Living The purpose of Centres for Independent Living (CIL) is to empower and enable people with disabilities to achieve Independent Living as a Human Right. They aim to ensure that people with disabilities can actively participate as equal citizens, with the choices, control and responsibilities that this implies through action research, support and advocacy.

Rehab Limerick includes RehabCare Centres (Limerick Resource Centre, Limerick Home Based Services), National Learning Network Centres (Limerick, National Learning Network Employer Based Training for Clare, Limerick, North Tipperary, National Learning Network Distance Learning for Limerick, Clare and North Tipperary, Limerick Supported Employment, National Learning Network Jutland Hall, ARC Programme) and Rehab Enterprise Centre at Rehab Logistics, Limerick.

Rehab Clare includes RehabCare Centre at Shannon – Shannon Day Service.

Rehab Galway includes RehabCare Centres (Galway Resource Centre and Costello Resource Centre), National Learning Network Centres (for Galway, Quest Brain Injury Services Ireland) and Rehab Enterprise Centre (Rehab Recycle Galway/Connect Industries).

Rehab Tipperary includes RehabCare Centres (Nenagh Resource Centre, Clonmel Resource Centre) and National Learning Network Clonmel.

The National Learning Network is part of the Rehab Group and is Ireland's largest non-government training organisation with centres in many counties in Ireland.   It provides services to about 5,000 people a year in order to develop their skills to move forward with their careers. Over 40 different vocational programmes are on offer.  See the website for further details.

Down Syndrome Ireland is an organisation of people with Down syndrome and their parents and guardians. It has over 3000 member families with 25 branches nationwide, and is funded by voluntary contributions and events organised by its members. Click the Branches tab on this site to find contact details for each of the branches below. 

The Clare branch
runs social activities, information sessions and has committee meetings once a month as well as speech therapy sessions.  

The Limerick branch
’s primary service at the moment is the speech clinic where two full time speech therapists are employed. In addition to this there is music therapy, drama and swimming on a regular basis and once-off courses in make-up, road safety and art classes. It also runs summer camps, junior and senior Christmas parties and other social activities. 

The Tipperary branch
holds social outings, music therapy sessions and invites guest speakers.
 

www.cheshire.ie Cheshire House in Galway is located near Merlin Park.  It opened in 1996 and was purpose-built to provide accommodation and support to 10 adults with physical/sensory disabilities and a range of support needs. Galway Cheshire is part of a new community environment, with recent housing and retail outlets developing in the area.

Rathfredagh Cheshire Home, Newcastle West, Co. Limerick opened in 1971. It accommodates 26 service users. The courtyard supported-living apartments accommodate 5 service users, separate from the main house.

There are 18 Camphill communities in Ireland providing services to around 500 adults. The communities practice bio-dynamic agriculture, offering opportunities for people to work with organic farming and gardening methods. Some communities are located in urban places where shops and cafes sell the farm or garden produce, crafts, and baked goods.

The MooreHaven Centre, Tipperary town, is a centre for adults in the mild to moderate range of intellectual disability.  It provides a day centre for over 100 adults and a residential service to 19 adults.

Clare Supported Employment Service (CSES) is a service which supports people with an illness, injury or disability to secure employment. Job Seekers, over 18 years of age, with a disability such as: Intellectual, Mental Health, Physical, Sensory, Hidden, Acquired Brain Injury, can avail of the service.
